“PROTRIO” is a ceramic tile design inspired by the pyramids of Egypt.
Protrio was created under the concept of Regular Irregularity for the 2017 Yurtbay Ceramic Tile Design Competition in Turkey. The idea was to create something complex but at the same time simple. Pyramids have simple forms when viewed from the exterior, but when you walk into the interior you can easily become lost within their fantastic architectural plan. Another important point was to create something that would produce a continuing pattern when laid out in either a regular or irregular array. This interplay of simplicity and complexity is reflected in the design of this tile. The small and large triangles mirror each other and finish in a well-balanced final design. Protrio won the first prize in the 2017 Yurtbay Ceramic Tile Design Competition. Yurtbay Ceramic and I collaborated to put this design into production for the 2018 UNICERA-Ceramic Bathroom Kitchen Fair in Istanbul, Turkey.
Patterns created from a simple geometric form using a contemporary language of expression can be both mixed and repetitive horizontally/vertically. In this project, the design has turned it into a texture sensibility by not leaving it shallow like a “decorative pattern”. By using the lines forming the form in the design as unglazed/relief, the pattern has been transformed into 3 dimensions in a sophisticated way. It is aimed that the product can capture a sophisticated, elegant order even in its irregular use, and to be able to express it with a simple expression with the colors and textures used.

Each of the tiles is 30x60 cm in size, and the relief designs are 1 mm thick. Copper tones were chosen for the pattern color in contrast with the matte ivory color chosen for the lower surface.
